Why we say NO to laser pointers at Shade Mtn Dolls and recommend safer ways to play. The use of laser pointers for feline play is popular among cat owners. While many experts assert that it is safe and effectively promotes exercise, laser play alone does not allow cats to complete the hunting sequence by not allowing them to 'capture' the prey. This may lead to frustration and stress, potentially resulting in compulsive and undesirable behaviors.
Cats, with their high prey drive, require stimulation and enrichment. Engaging in instinctual play not only supports their mental and physical health but also strengthens the bond between you and your pet.
A cat's natural instinct to play is closely tied to their drive to hunt for food. Although the domestication of cats has relieved them of this necessity, the instinct persists.
Providing an environment that allows them to express their prey drive fosters a sense of normalcy for your cat, making play fun and enjoyable.
Natural toys, such as wands with attached fur or feathers, can simulate birds and mice—creatures they might encounter in the wild. It is beneficial to move the wand in a way that mimics a bird flying or a mouse scurrying, such as under a sheet or blanket. When playing with your cat, ensure they have several opportunities to catch their prey. The heightened arousal during play can lead to frustration if they are not allowed to satisfy their prey drive. Cats need playtime and interaction with humans to bond, so why not combine both and enjoy the experience?
While laser pointers can stimulate a cat's prey drive, they do not offer the satisfaction of a catch, leaving your cat frustrated and confused. Cats do not comprehend that the toy has been turned off and will continue to search for the 'hidden' prey. This type of play offers no reward, which is neither beneficial for your cat nor your relationship with them.
This alone should make you want to say NO to laser pointers for your cats and other pets.
Given the wide range of toys available today, there is no need to take such risks. There are safer alternatives.
At Shade Mtn Dolls, our cats have access to a range of toys for solo play. Our daily play sessions include various interactive toys, with the most popular being an extra-long (36-inch) wand that allows for different toys to be attached. Their favorite attachments include feathers and fur. We switch out these attachments regularly, offering different textures and experiences.
We are in the process of developing a prototype for a new interactive wand toy. Once it is completely safe and approved cat approved, you'll be the first to hear about it. Stay tuned. Meanwhile, here are some of our favorite toys. This isn't a sponsored post; we just adore them!
